Unlike the Swedes, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has recognized the existence of women, awarding this year’s Peace Prize to two journalists, Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov, “for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.” Notably, Ressa’s book HOW TO STAND UP TO A DICTATOR is scheduled for publication in the UK next April from WH Allen. Tanzanian-born novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents.” Gurnah writes in English, and teaches English Literature at the University of Kent in Canterbury. National Book Awards Cancels Plans for In-Person Ceremony, Returns to Virtual Event

After planning for an in-person event for vaccinated guests, the National Book Awards ceremony will be held virtually this year, “in light of public health concerns and ongoing uncertainty related to the coronavirus.” The ceremony will be streamed live on the National Book Foundation’s website, YouTube, and Facebook at 7 PM Eastern on November 17. The National Book Foundation will award Karen Tei Yamashita the 2021 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, to be presented at the in-person National Book Award ceremony in November.
