Amazon remains in experimental mode with their physical retail footprint, as the WSJ reported the company will close all 87 of their US pop-up stores, likely by the end of April. A spokesperson confirmed, “After much review, we came to the decision to discontinue our pop-up kiosk program and are instead expanding Amazon Books and Amazon 4-Star, where we provide a more comprehensive customer experience and broader selection.” The extent of that expansion of dedicated Amazon stores remains unclear, however. The New York Review of Books named two new co-editors, Emily Greenhouse, 32, and Gabriel Winslow-Yost, 33, to succeed Ian Buruma, who left last September. Greenhouse was most recently the managing editor of The New Yorker, but was an assistant at NYRB in 2011 and 2012. Winslow-Yost has worked at NYRB since 2009, most recently as a senior editor. Longtime contributor Daniel Mendelsohn will take on the new role of editor at large. Amazon Cancels Plans for New York Headquarters
Amazon announced Thursday that it has cancelled plans for its new NYC headquarters, after facing opposition from the local community. “After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens,” said the company in a statement. Long Island City was selected in November as ones of the locations for HQ2, but residents and politicians spoke out about the transit and real estate problems it could create, and criticized the $3 billion in incentives offered by New York City and state leaders.
