Doubleday will publish New Yorker staff writer Jane Mayer‘s topical DARK MONEY: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right on January 19, 2016, with an announced first printing of 150,000 copies. Author Cornelia Funke‘s new independent publishing house Breathing Books has a sales and distribution agreement with PGW for the US and Canada. Her first title, The Golden Yarn, is now set for publication on December 1, 2015. Mark Gompertz will join Skyhorse Publishing as group editorial director on November 9. Most recently he was creative director, content extensions for Hearst Magazines. Founder and publisher Tony Lyons says in the announcement, “With Mark’s rare combination of editorial acumen and publishing know-how, he will help take Skyhorse to new heights.” Skyhorse says it is projecting sales for 2015 of $43 million. At America’s Test Kitchen, Jack Bishop has been promoted to chief creative officer. NetGalley announced that they will launch their service in Germany, partnering with publisher Ullstein‘s reader platform Vorablesen. The service is set to debut in spring 2016. Ingram has expanded the roster of international digital printing and distribution partners in their Global Connect program. Belarus journalist and author Svetlana Alexievich won the Nobel Prize for Literature on Thursday, cited by the Swedish Academy for “her polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time.” Though Alexievich had been installed as the bettors’ favorite over the past few weeks, she is another instance of an under-translated Nobel winner in the English language: her oral history Voices From Chernobyl (1997) was published in 2005 by Dalkey Archive Press and then in paperback the next spring by Picador — and the book (with Keith Gessen’s translation) won the National Book Critics Circle Award.
