Author Cornelia Funke‘s new independent publishing house Breathing Books has a sales and distribution agreement with PGW for the US and Canada. Her first title, The Golden Yarn, is now set for publication on December 1, 2015. (When Funke originally announced that she was parting ways with Little, Brown Children’s and Chicken House in the UK, she was aiming for a November release of the book.) Lori Galvin has joined Zachary Shuster Harmsworth as an agent based in the firm’s Boston office, as part of their “deepening…commitment to representing the finest writers of cookbooks.” Galvin worked for more than a decade at America’s Test Kitchen, where she helped lead a team that produced dozens of cookbooks. Architect Peter Pennoyer will take over as president of the board of The Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation. He succeeds Antonia Grumbach, chair-elect of the Wildlife Conservation Society. Mark Gompertz will join Skyhorse Publishing as group editorial director on November 9. Most recently he was creative director, content extensions for Hearst Magazines. Founder and publisher Tony Lyons says in the announcement, “With Mark’s rare combination of editorial acumen and publishing know-how, he will help take Skyhorse to new heights.” Skyhorse says it is projecting sales for 2015 of $43 million. If they fulfill those expectations, sales will be up 30 percent compared to 2014 (meaning sales were about $33 million last year). At America’s Test Kitchen, Jack Bishop has been promoted to chief creative officer. NetGalley announced that they will launch their service in Germany, partnering with publisher Ullstein‘s reader platform Vorablesen. The service is set to debut in spring 2016. Ingram has expanded the roster of international digital printing and distribution partners in their Global Connect program. They will work with China National Publications Import & Export (CNPIEC) in China; Repro India in India; and Rotomail in Italy.

Belarus journalist and author Svetlana Alexievich won the Nobel Prize for Literature on Thursday, cited by the Swedish Academy for “her polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time.” Though Alexievich had been installed as the bettors’ favorite over the past few weeks, she is another instance of an under-translated Nobel winner in the English language: her oral history Voices From Chernobyl (1997) was published in 2005 by Dalkey Archive Press and then in paperback the next spring by Picador — and the book (with Keith Gessen’s translation) won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Hachette Book Group announced a new Rapid Replenishment Program, where all orders (subject to stock availability) received on Mondays by 3pm ET will be entered, picked, packed and guaranteed to arrive at accounts no later than Friday. Orders placed Tuesday through Friday will be entered, picked and packed within 24 hours and shipped standard method. This includes orders received into the Hachette system via electronic ordering platforms like Edelweiss. Perseus is partnering with FedEx on an agreement that will “significantly improve shipments to bookstores and other outlets across the US,” the company announced.
