Quarto has completed their acquisition of The Harvard Common Press, as of February 1, adding hundreds of titles to their backlist along with over 25,000 recipes. HCP will become an imprint of Quarto, with editorial and production run out of Quarto’s office in Beverly, MA and editorial director Dan Rosenberg keeping the same role. Harvard Common Press president and publisher Bruce Shaw and associate publisher Adam Salomone will no longer have daily operational positions, but will “remain in advisory roles with Quarto.” The two are partners at Salt Venture Partners, investing in food-related start-ups, and co-founders of The Food Loft. The Princeton University Press is beginning the rollout of their Princeton Legacy Library this week, bring back out-of-print backlist in ebook and on-demand editions available through Ingram Content Group. Over 1,200 titles will be released this week, with the full program comprising over 3,000 titles for reissue in “batches” through 2016. Press director Peter J. Ingram Announces Broader Printing Program
Ingram has announced what they call “a comprehensive solution for publishers to manage the complete life cycle of print books,” under the banner LifePrint. Firming up reports from June, Kobo has formalized their July launch dates in Japan: The Kobo Touch device is available for pre-order as of today with a full ebookstore, with more than 2.4 million ebooks plus additional Japanese-only content, ready by July 19 on parent company Rakuten’s website. The e-reader will be priced at 7,980 yen including tax (or $100 USD). Amazon is delighted to declare “strong customer adoption” of the Kindle Owners Lending Library and oodles of money for participating Kindle Select (e.g. Kindle-exclusive) self-published authors. Interestingly, however, the extra money that Amazon claims participants received–“an incremental 26 percent in December”–is roughly equal to the proclaimed market share of No. 2 ebook player Nook, where Select authors and publishers can no longer sell. Which begs the question of whether participants are actually making more money in toto.
