Harper US eBook Sales Reach 19 Percent for the Quarter
News Corp. issued third quarter earnings and as has become the new standard, the words “book” and “HarperCollins” do not merit an appearance anywhere in the 13-page statement. The company’s publishing division overall was a mess–operating income fell $82 million thanks to The Daily and advertising declines in the UK and Australian newspapers, and a marketing services litigation settlement cost another $125 million. Lagardere Sales Slide As US eBooks Hit 22%, Plus UK Digital Stats and Asian Device Updates
Today’s stories offer digital statistics and hints from all over. Lagardere issued a brief first quarter trading update. Publishing revenues were 390 million euros, down 9.8 percent on an absolute basis, and down 10.4 percent from a year ago on a like-for-like basis. Once again, they attribute the drop to Stephenie Meyer’s declining sales. eBook Sales Set Another Record, But Can’t Outpace the Decline in Print
eBooks indisputably comprise a significant portion of trade revenues following the Christmas boom in ereading-capable devices, confirmed by another record ebook sales tally from among the 14 publishers who report. The AAP data also shows what publishers’ net shipments look like in a world in which no one is sending books to Borders. February ebook sales totaled $90.3 million, significantly ahead of the record $69.9 million reported the previous month. At a conference last week Hachette Livre CEO Arnaud Nourry told Le Figaro that Hachette Book Group USA ebook sales since January “are in line with the national average,” which the AAP reported as comprising approximately 23.5 percent of the total trade in January. Indeed, HBG is one of the 14 publishers who report ebook sales to the AAP to begin with. The much-anticipated January 2011 AAP ebook sales report shows the spike that many expected: among the 14 publishers who contribute data, wholesale ebook sales jumped to a new all-time high of $69.9 million. As a result, ebooks comprised 23.5 percent of all trade book sales for the month. (In December, ebook sales of $49.5 million comprised just under 8 percent of trade sales.)
