Tablet Rumors: Wednesday Announcement Scheduled From Amazon; Internal Slide Points to Higher-Priced BN Device

Amazon sent out invitations on Friday for an event taking place in New York on Wednesday, September 28 at 10 AM, at which time it’s widely expected the company will announce its new tablet. NYT An internal slide reportedly obtained by The Digital Reader indicates that Barnes & Noble will launch a tablet priced at $349 (code-named Acclaim) in addition to a new version of the 7″ Nook Color, code-named Encore and still priced at $249.  The slide comes with initialed approval by WL/JI, which correspond to the initials of ceo William Lynch and head of digital products Jamie Iannone.

Digital Numbers: Another iPad Record, and More Hires for BN Palo Alto

Apple reported another strong quarter of sales overall, including moving 9.25 million iPads in their third quarter. That’s the best quarter ever for iPad sales, well ahead of the previous high set in the period ending last Christmas, when they sold 7.33 million tablets. And it’s nearly double the second quarter iPad sales of 4.7 million units. Blio Finally Adds iOS App–For Existing Customers Long after it was promised, Blio finally launched iOS apps in Apple’s App Store on Tuesday (announced in a press release that for some odd reason was embargoed until today). iPad 2 Ships March 11 in US; Random House’s 17K Titles In iBookstore

The slimmer, thinner, camera-laden iPad 2 was unveiled yesterday with typical Apple fanfare, releasing March 11 in the US and March 25 in 25 other countries. The surprise was the appearance of Steve Jobs who presented expected news: now that Random House has adopted the agency model, their full electronic list of 17,000 is available through the iBookstore in the US. Barnes & Noble Ships Nook Color A Little Early, to Generally Good Reviews

Barnes & Noble has started fulfilling preorders for the new Nook Color a few days ahead of schedule with units starting to arrive today. Demonstration devices and “very limited quantities of devices available for purchase” will start showing up in Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Walmart and Books-A-Million stores “beginning this week.” At least a few review units have been distributed, with tech sites posting their appraisals this morning. So far the write-ups are generally quite positive. eNews: Kno’s Pricing; Grisham’s eBook Makes Up for Hardcover Shortfall; Amazon Said to Negotiate German eBooks; E Ink’s Triton

Kno, the tablet maker focused on the higher education textbook market, has announced pricing for their forthcoming devices. Their giant dual-screen, 14.1-inch tablet will sell for $899, and the single-screen model will list for $599. Their pitch is that “when you do the math, it actually pays for itself and still saves $1,300 in digital textbook costs.” They are taking “limited” pre-orders for first shipments before the end of the year, targeting 10 US college campuses to start.
