Ami Greko is leaving Macmillan and will join AdaptiveBlue on January 18 as director of business development. Chris Kahn will join the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) to manage vendor relations, advertising, sponsorship and media partnership opportunities. He takes over from Andrea Nathan, who leaves the organization at the end of January for “a new career path.” Kahn was formerly western advertising director for Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and School Library Journal. New for 2010, Nielsen Bookscan now includes point-of-sale data from BJ’s Wholesale Club (over 180 stores); Meijer (with 190 supercenters); and The Paradies Shops (with over 500 stores in more than 70 airports and hotels).
ABA Cuts Five Positions In Reorganization
After “many months of analysis and investigation,” American Booksellers Association ceo Oren Teicher announced a reorganization that includes the elimination of five jobs from an already lean staff. Barnes & Noble Holiday Comps Down 5.4%; Earnings Guidance Reduced
The nine-week holiday selling period at Barnes & Noble was another rough one, with same-store sales down 5.4 percent at $1.1 billion (and bear in mind that the comps a year ago were down 7 percent from 2007). Sales at BN.com rose 17 percent however, at $134 million, in large part because of nook revenues recognized in that period. (BN.com had sales of $114 million in the same period a year ago. The Library of America has hired Trish Hoard as production editor. Hoard was previously managing editor at Counterpoint Press and associate publisher at Shoemaker & Hoard. She replaces retiring managing editor Sharon Graham, who had overseen the publication of all 200 volumes in the Library of America series, dating back to 1982, along with numerous special publications.
