James Patterson announced his newest project, BookShots, a line of books 150 pages or less that will be published by longtime publisher Little, Brown and sold for under $5 each, available in print, digital and audio formats. The NYT reports BookShots “would be aimed at readers who might not want to invest their time in a 300- or 400-page novel” and “might even appeal to people who do not normally read at all.” Little, Brown plans 21 Bookshots for 2016, starting in June with Patterson’s Cross Kill,  Zoo II, written by Patterson and Max DiLallo, and Chase, co-written with Michael Ledwidge. HarperCollins Will Lower TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Trade Paperback Price For Schools

March 15, 2016By Sarah Weinman

HarperCollins announced Tuesday afternoon that it will offer the trade paperback edition of Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird at a lower price through its accounts that sell directly to K-12 schools in the US. That license is about to expire and will not be renewed, according to an email from Hachette Book Group to retailers seen and reported on by the New Republic. A […]

Scholastic Pulls Picture Book After Slavery Depiction Backlash

January 18, 2016By Sarah Weinman

Scholastic announced that it has withdrawn publication of the picture book A Birthday Cake for George Washington by Ramin Ganeshram and illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton, which was published on January 5. The book had been criticized sharply for its upbeat depiction of slaves, with School Library Journal calling it “highly problematic” while Kirkus Reviews deemed it “an incomplete, even dishonest treatment of slavery.” There are more than 100 one-star reviews of the book on Amazon so far. The publisher said in a statement Sunday night: “While we have great respect for the integrity and scholarship of the author, illustrator, and editor, we […]
