Hachette Book Group‘s planned relocation has become real estate news via Crain’s, which confirms the publisher’s lease of space at 1290 Sixth Avenue for occupancy some time next year. They are taking over a chunk of two floors recently vacated by Microsoft. The move will put them across the street from their old home in the Time-Life Building (and just north of Simon & Schuster). Booknet Canada and Nielsen have released a study (as a pdf) of the lift in sales of works by Alice Munro after she was named the Nobel Laureate in Literature in October. (The prize was […]

eBook Sales Are In Decline (For Now), As August Marks Turnaround for Trade
With two new months of trade sales data from the AAP released today, one recent trend is ratified: ebook sales by established trade publishers are in decline. For the approximately 1,200 publishers that report to the AAP, ebook sales have declined for 5 months in a row on a year-over-year basis. Adult ebook sales have declined for 4 months in a row. And for the first 8 months of the year, total ebook sales stand at $982 million — down from $1.04 billion a year ago. These numbers are all remarkable for a format that has experienced nothing but continuous […]
More Details On Top Self-Publishers That Use ISBNs
When Bowker first announced their updated 2012 statistics last month about newly issued self-published books and ebooks that carry ISBNs last month, we were asked not to share specifics about individual companies. As we noted, four companies account for over 80 percent of the ISBN-carrying self-published books. There is no data available on the substantial flow of ebooks from the likes of KDP and Nook Press that carry only proprietary identifiers rather than ISBNs. So in the Bowker counts, self-published print books still are in the lead. CreateSpace alone accounted for over 55 percent of the ISBNs, with 131,000 titles […]

One core coverage area of ours that we’re quietly proud of even though it’s not particularly glamorous to traditional journalists is what we call People. Long ago we made thorough tracking of job […]

eBook Sales Fall Three Months In A Row As Overall Trade Declines Continue
The AAP issued a belated double batch of sales statistics for May and June from their approximately 1,200 reporting publishers, along with sub-totals for the first half of the year. Just as remarkable sales for The Hunger Games and then Fifty Shades lifted results in 2012, the absence of monster hits since then continues to weigh on industry-wide stats. The two big numerical trends continued: After flattening last fall, overall trade sales have declined for 8 consecutive months. And ebook sales, which had been growing — albeit slowly — have now declined for 3 straight months. May trade sales of $525 […]
