July 21, 2023By Michael Cader

Scottish publisher Sandstone Press went into bankruptcy liquidation earlier this week, with its assets offered for sale by Hilco Valuation Services. Amazon Continues to Fight Minimum Shipping Fee in France

June 28, 2023By Katy Hershberger

Amazon has appealed to the highest court in France, seeking to overturn a law that would impose a minimum €3 fee to ship books under €35, Reuters reports. The law is intended to protect independent retailers, which can’t match Amazon’s typical delivery fee of one cent. “This measure will deal a severe blow to the budgets of French people and will limit their access to books at a time when consumers’ purchasing power is one of their main worries,” Amazon France chief executive Frederic Duval told Reuters. The law is set to go into effect in October.

June 22, 2023By Katy Hershberger

UK books retailer WH Smith failed to pay the minimum wage to employees, the BBC reports. The chain told the BBC that the mistake was due to misunderstanding the UK’s rules about uniforms and not reimbursing staff for required clothes that they purchased out of pocket. “Following a review with HMRC in 2019, and in common with a number of retailers, it was brought to our attention that we had misinterpreted how the […]

June 19, 2023By Michael Cader

On Friday, following clearance from the EU for Vivendi’s acquisition of Lagardere, the company announced they had executed the planned agreement to sell the publisher Editis to International Media Invest (IMI). That spinoff will require its own approval from the European Commission, though Vivendi says, “Completion is expected by early October 2023 at the latest.” IMI is owned by Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky. He also owns a 25 percent share in French-based retailer of books and other media, FNAC, and has reportedly expressed interest in buying a controlling share in the company.
