Larry Kirshbaum will join the Waxman Leavell Literary Agency as a senior agent starting February 24, the WSJ reported. Scott Waxman says, “He’ll be an independent agent building his own list like every agent does. I’ve always admired Larry and our team is extremely fortunate to have him as a colleague.” Kirshbaum was an agent for his own firm, LJK Literary Management, between 2005 and mid-2011. (His former colleagues at that agency reconstituted as the Einstein Thompson Agency when Kirshbaum joined Amazon Publishing in 2011.) Amazon’s Brilliance Publishing Adds Christian Imprint
Michigan-based Amazon Publishing unit Brilliance is launching their second book imprint, Waterfall Press, a Christian line specializing in faith-based non-fiction and fiction. (Not be confused with Penguin Random House’s Christian line WaterBrook.) Just over a year ago, Brilliance started the inspirational line Grand Harbor Press. Tammy Faxel will lead editorial for the new imprint. With “30 years of experience in the Christian publishing industry” she has worked previously at Tyndale House and Oasis Audio. A number of the launch titles are being published in collaboration with Christianity Today.
S&S Adds New Sci-Fi/Fantasy Adult Trade Imprint, Simon451
Having recently launched a science fiction & fantasy imprint out of its children’s division, Simon & Schuster will now do the same through their adult trade imprint, starting in October 2014. The new imprint, Simon451 (a reference to Ray Bradbury’s iconic novel, published by S&S) is devoted to “publishing literary and commercial speculative fiction across categories such as science fiction, fantasy, dystopian, apocalyptic and the supernatural.” Simon451 will focus primarily on digital-first editions and ebook originals but also experiment with publishing serialized novels and original short stories, while reissuing classic backlist titles in digital format. Amazon Delivers Another Imprint, For Short Fiction
It’s not as imaginative as an octocopter, but Amazon Publishing announced another new brand on Wednesday. StoryFront is the name for their expanding line of short fiction, sold for between 99 cents and $1.99. The imprint also houses Day One, their weekly digital magazine of short fiction and poetry — and part of StoryFront’s list sells the works that have appeared in Day One a la carte. (The journal sells for $1.59 a month.) Macmillan Children’s UK announced the creation of two audience-focused publishing divisions, Macmillan Under 6s, to be overseen by publisher Stephanie Barton, and Macmillan Over 6s, led by Venetia Gosling. Both Barton and Gosling will report to Belinda Rasmussen, with Gosling also working with Pan Macmillan publisher Jeremy Trevethan on crossover projects. Each new division also announced additional promotions: At Under 6s, Suzanne Carnell becomes publishing director, Picture Books & Pre-School, and Jackie McCann moves up to editorial director, Campbell and nursery. 39-year-old Derek Jeter may be in the twilight of his baseball career, but his publishing career is just beginning. The longtime New York Yankee has entered into a co-publishing partnership with Simon & Schuster. Jeter Publishing intends to publish widely, across adult non-fiction, children’s picture books, middle grade fiction, and ready-to-read children’s books.
