HarperCollins will launch another digital-focused imprint, Harper Teen Impulse, publishing short fiction for teens. The new line launches December 4 with a novella by Sophie Jordan, BREATHLESSS, and a futuristic novella from Scott Westerfeld, STUPID PERFECT WORLD, both selling for $1.99. The company indicates it will publish up to 4 ebooks a month, priced from 99 cents to $2.99. Rodale Books publisher Steve Perrine is leaving the company after more than 20 years along with Men’s Health editor-in-chief and general manager of Rodale Books and the Healthy Living Group Dave Zinczenko. The NY Post reports the two men “are said to be teaming up on a new venture” while ceo Maria Rodale told the paper Zinczenko’s departure “was a mutual decision, but we initiated the discussion.” Former literary agent at ICM Kate Lee has joined online publishing platform startup Medium as director of content in New York, where she will “be building a small team to help her.” They […]

Crown will launch a new dedicated religion imprint, Convergent Books, in Fall 2013. Aiming to publish between 8 and 10 books annually, it will “explore the contemporary faith experience for a broad range of Christians who are drawn to an open, inclusive, and culturally engaged exploration of faith.” The line will be headed by publisher of Crown’s Christian imprints Stephen Cobb and run out out of Colorado Springs, CO. We know how you can be, and some of you may be enjoying the WSJ’s piece “Amazon Struggles to Crack Publishing” piece a little too much this morning. The focus of the article is that print sales for Amazon’s recently launched New York-based trade imprint are low–because most other outlets are not stocking the company’s titles. HarperCollins has taken a clear lead in celebrity imprint production, adding Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil (the same name as his film production company) to a roster that already includes Dennis Lehane Books and Anthony Bourdain Books. In similar fashion, Depp’s line has announced a slate of two books so far: Historian Douglas Brinkley’s The Unraveled Tales of Bob Dylan (for publication in 2015), and a second collaboration with Brinkley, who is writing an introduction along with Depp to folk singer Woody Guthrie’s novel, House of Earth, for publication in January 2013. Zondervan and Thomas Nelson will merge its fiction divisions into a single unit overseen by vp, publisher Daisy Hutton. Though fiction acquisitions will be “managed centrally,” with editors working across both Thomas Nelson and Zondervan, the publishers will keep separate offices in Grand Rapids, MI and Nashville, TN respectively.
