Macmillan has reported significant progress in recovering from the cyber attack in late June resulting in “encryption of certain files on our network” that led them to take their computer systems offline. Macmillan released another statement on Friday updating their work to restore their systems after last weekend’s “security incident, which involves the encryption of certain files on our network.” The Pan Macmillan UK warehouse “resumed operations” on June 28. Macmillan Slowly Goes Back Online
According to various Twitter posts, some Macmillan employees are back online after a security incident shut down their systems in the US and UK this week. The roll out gives those staffers access to email, which is run through Gmail, but they may not be able to use systems outside of the Google suite.

Macmillan Closed For Security Incident
Macmillan is closed today for an unspecified “security incident” that occurred on Saturday. They write in a statement: “Macmillan became aware of a security incident that impacted our servers and internal systems. While we immediately responded to secure the threat, our work is ongoing. Out of an abundance of caution, we have closed our offices Monday, June 27 to allow us time to continue our investigation, and are working diligently with third-parties to return to a secure working environment.”
AP Stylebook Updates Recommendations for Inclusive Storytelling
The 56th edition of The Associated Press Stylebook, released on Wednesday, includes updated guidance for reporting on race, gender, disability, and more, as well as a new chapter on inclusive storytelling, Poynter reports. Among the updates are recommendations to capitalize Deaf when referring to the Deaf community and to use they/them/their as much as possible for individuals who use those pronouns.
