Scholastic CEO Dick Robinson Dies at 84

Scholastic’s longtime chairman and ceo Richard Robinson, Jr. died “unexpectedly” on Saturday at 84. The company said he “had been in excellent health and had been overseeing Scholastic’s long-term strategic direction and day-to-day operations for the better part of five decades.” The company says that “under a pre-authorized framework,” lead independent director (and CFO at Lionsgate) James Barge will work with chief strategy officer Iole Lucchese, general counsel Andrew S. Nate Lanman has been promoted to associate editor at William Morrow.   Mia Council has been promoted to associate editor at Penguin Press. Awards The London Book Fair announced seven recipients of its International Excellence Awards. Winners included Findaway Voices in the US won the AudioBook Publisher of the Year Award, while Hachette UK won the Inclusivity in Publishing Award. The Rights Professional Award went to Nora Mercurio at Suhrkamp in Germany.

At Viking Children’s Tamar Brazis has been promoted to associate publisher; Aneeka Kalia to associate editor; and Meriam Metoui to assistant editor. At Penguin Children’s, Ellice Lee has been promoted to senior art director, and Kate Renner has been promoted to associate art director. Eric Carle, 91, author and illustrator of more than 70 books for children including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, died on May 23 at his summer studio in Northampton, MA. Illustrator of books including Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (and Caldecott Honor recipient for Color Zoo in 1990) Lois Ehlert,  86, died on Tuesday in Milwaukee.
