Small Press Distribution executive director Brent Cunningham has stepped down, following a workplace assessment that concluded SPD “needs a reboot of its management, workplace policies, and relationship between staff and leaders.” Last December, the distributor was accused by an anonymous employee of illegal payroll practices leading to employees being underpaid, as well as anti-worker hostility and abuse resulting in the employee resigning in early 2020. Winter Institute 2021 closed on Saturday morning with a keynote titled “What Now?!” from author and professor Brené Brown (previously slated to be Thursday’s opening keynote, but reschedule due to weather in Texas). Day two of Winter Institute kicked off with a keynote discussion among Lauren Groff, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Colson Whitehead, and moderator Michelle Malonzo titled Novelist as Citizen. The writers spoke about the role of the novelist in the wake of political upheaval, the purpose of literature, and more. Mary-Kay Wilmers is stepping down as editor of the London Review of Books, but will remain involved as a consulting editor. Deputy editor Jean McNicol and senior editor Alice Spawls will succeed her as editors of the LRB. Wilmers helped found the publication in 1979, and has been sole editor since 1992. She said in the announcement, “The succession has been long in the planning and I’m very proud to be handing over the editorship to two such talented women. Vivendi Becomes Second Largest Shareholder in Amber-Backed Prisa
Vivendi has built a 9.9 percent stake in education and media publisher Grupo Prisa, which owns El Pais newspaper as well as Santillana, a major educational publisher, particularly in South America. Prisa sold the Santillana trade business to Penguin Random House in 2014 and though lightly reported, last October they agreed to sell Santillana’s K-12 business in Spain to Finland’s Sanoma, an enterprise value of 465 million euros.
