Frankfurt Book Fair

Juergen Boos will step down as president and ceo of Frankfurt Book Fair after the 2026 edition of the fair this October. He has held the role for more than 20 years.

Joachim Kaufmann will succeed him as president and ceo. Kaufmann was previously the longtime ceo Carlsen Verlag.

Karsten Schmidt-Hern, chairman of the supervisory board of Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels Beteiligungsgesellschaft, the parent company of Frankfurter Buchmesse, said in a release, “We are delighted to have secured Joachim Kaufmann as the new President and CEO of Frankfurter Buchmesse. As an exceptionally successful and internationally well-connected publishing executive, he is the ideal successor to Juergen Boos. We are convinced that Joachim Kaufmann will continue the Frankfurter Buchmesse’s success story while at the same time providing new impetus to ensure that the fair remains both rooted in tradition and fit for the future.”

The company has instituted layoffs, with some nonfiction editors at the flagship imprint reported to be affected. Editors Emily Simonson, Mindy Marques and Eamon Dolan are among those no longer at the company, along with Rebecca Strobel at Gallery and Melissa Milsten at Black Privilege/Atria.

Update: Within a week thereafter, autoreplies indicated that Scribner executive director of marketing Brianna Yamashita and associate publisher at S&S Children’s Anna Jarzab also left the company.

According to an S&S spokesperson, the company has made staffing changes as they adjust to the market and focus on growth areas.
