PEN America

CEO Suzanne Nossel will leave her position to become president and ceo at international nonprofit Freedom House. Summer Lopez and Clarisse Rosaz Shariyf have been named interim co-ceos, effective immediately, and PEN will undertake a national search for a new permanent ceo.

“We are thrilled to have Summer and Clarisse take the helm of PEN America as Interim Co-CEOs, PEN America president Jennifer Finney Boylan said in a release. “As chief program officers at PEN America, Summer and Clarisse have demonstrated their commitment to our mission of elevating writers and literature and protecting free expression, along with a track record of excellence in leadership. We are also grateful to Suzanne Nossel, to whom we wish success in her future endeavors.”

According to the Washington Post, Nossel wrote in a memo to staff, “‘my pride in what we have achieved together is boundless, and well beyond what an email can recount,’ adding that she looked forward to ‘reverting to the role that drew me to the literary world and PEN America in the first place — that of an avid and admiring reader.'”
