Diversity Baseline Survey
Lee & Low publisher Jason Lowannounced that the company’s Diversity Baseline Survey—which was scheduled to be conducted this year and released in early 2027—will be delayed indefinitely. The company will instead focus its efforts on issues of book banning around the country.
“In the face of extreme censorship that targets diverse authors and titles, our first priority as publishers must shift toward continuing to publish and sell diverse books for children in contentious times,” Low writes. “The second priority is to redirect the time and effort we would have spent on DBS 4.0 and channel it toward the fight to ban book bans.”
As one initiative, Low dubs Monday, March 2 “Contact the Governor Day,” with regard to New York governor Kathy Hochul’s vetoing of the Freedom to Read bill, and includes suggestions for New York-based companies to get involved.
