Awards, People, Etc.

October 12, 2010By Michael Cader

Ladbrokes had suspended betting last week after 50 percent more money was wagered on a single title–Tom McCarthy’s C–on Wednesday than had been bet in total since the longlist was announced in July. Most illuminating, though, was the revelation that for all the attention the Booker betting draws, Ladbrokes took just 10,000 pounds of wagers up until Wednesday, when another 15,000 pounds was bet on McCarthy alone. Traditionally the favorite […]

October 11, 2010By Michael Cader

Founder and co-owner of Washington, DC’s much-admired Politics and Prose bookstore Carla Cohen died this morning following her battle with a rare cancer of the bile ducts. The Washington Post remembers her as “a former urban planner who conceived of Politics and Prose as a salon where Washington readers and writers could gather to challenge each other in discussion about the big ideas of the day — a place that would reach beyond customers’ pocketbooks and become part of their lives.” Cohen and fellow owner Barbara Meade put the store up for sale earlier this year. In a obituary posted […]

Ingram’s Comprehensive “New Distribution Services Model” with Springer Includes Taking Over Printing

October 11, 2010By Michael Cader

Following quickly on their partnership with Macmillan on “long tail” backlist, Ingram has announced a broader new initiative with Springer in which the wholesaler will take over Springer’s entire US supply chain. Ingram will manage warehousing and fulfillment for Springer and will transition manufacturing to a model that focuses on print-on-demand. Initially Ingram will hold all of Springer’s physical inventory in their warehouses; as that inventory sells down, Ingram will move replenishment from offset to print-on-demand “when it makes the most economic sense.” The program begins in the first quarter of 2011. Springer evp of customer service, fulfillment and logistics […]

October 11, 2010By Michael Cader

Publishers and fans of Stieg Larsson won’t let go of the idea that a nearly-finished manuscript in the bestselling Millennium series might be published some day, even though those in a position to control its fate keep saying it won’t. The latest installment was a hyped CBS Sunday Morning interview with the late Larsson’s father Erland and brother Joakim, who control the author’s estate (over the continuing objections of Larsson’s partner, Eve Gabrielsson. But “the Larssons say they won’t publish the book even if it surfaces.” Which is what Publishers Lunch reported in June 2009, when Joakim Larsson told us […]
