Sony’s “third generation” of their Reader Digital Book was announced today, for release next month. The new version adds a touch screen, letting readers “flip pages with the slide of a finger.” You can also use fingers or a stylus to search, create notes and highlight text. The touch screen provides for a pop-up “virtual keyboard.” It also adds a built-in LED reading light to help in low-light situations. Beaufort Books is moving forward the publication date of Sherry Jones’s THE JEWEL OF MEDINA to Monday. President Eric Kampmann says, “By speeding up the publication, we wanted to reduce or eliminate the chance of violence.” He adds, “We wanted people to have a chance to read the book. Coretta Scott King Book in Family Feud
Penguin has notified King Inc., which controls the intellectual property of Martin Luther King’s estate, “of its intent to terminate the contract and demand repayment of a $300,000 advance if it doesn’t receive promised photos, personal writings and intimate letters within seven business days,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The contract, signed in May, provided for a $1.2 million advance to King Inc. and another $200,000 for journalist-turned-minister Rev. Burnt Grapes Sale Is Close
Bunch of Grapes, the Martha’s Vineyard bookstore that was closed by a fire this summer, has been for sale by owner Jon Nelson. The local paper says “last month’s New England Independent Booksellers trade show was buoyed by rumors of its imminent sale.” His mother Ann Nelson, who owns the building that houses the store, is moving forward with reconstruction and “hopes to have the place fit for a bookstore by spring.”MV Gazette
