Diane Cox has bought Whittier, CA’s The Little Old Bookshop and will reopen it this week as Half Off Books. Item Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif., will re-open Monday in an expanded location. The store will have an Espresso Book Machine and host events.La Canada Online But The Muses Bookstore in Morganton, NC is closing after 40 years, calling the rise of ereading the “last nail” in the coffin. Item And Seattle bookshop Twice Sold Tales will relinquish its store in the city’s University District and sell books exclusively online.Seattle P-I

Nashville GLBT OutLoud Bookstore Is Closing; Some POD Bestsellers

OutLoud founders Ted Jensen and Kevin Medley announced they will start liquidating inventory and close their store after 15 years in business. The Tennessean says “they alluded to reasons for closing such as high interest rates that small businesses can’t afford, lack of meaningful legislation that would help small businesses and the unfair advantages chain stores have over the small, locally owned ones.” Tennessean When the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale finishes a renovation in January, they will feature a new boutique run by Miami’s Books & Books. Books-a-Million is preparing to open a new store format shortly under the banner 2nd & Charles in Birmingham, the Birmingham Business Journal report. Borders is closing their store in Miami-area Aventura next month, even though “locals will tell you [it] always seems crowded” according to the local NBC station. “A Borders spokesperson told us on the phone from the company’s headquarters in Michigan that the Aventura store just wasn’t making enough money to justify keeping it open, especially with rents for such a large space as high as they are for a prime location on Biscayne Boulevard.” Owner of the area’s Books and Books Mitchell Kaplan remarks, “It’s a very precarious marketplace right now for all bookstores and for publishers as well.” He […]

Legacy Books Partner Tanner Will Open “A Real Bookstore” In Mid-November

As she hinted when the closing on Legacy Books in Plano, TX was announced recently, managing partner Teri Tanner will open a new store, called A Real Bookstore, in nearby Fairview in mid-November. It’s billed as her vision for a “post-recession bookstore.” Though smaller and less flashy than Legacy, it will still have about 20,000 square feet, on a single level. Publishing Veterans Bring Books & Books to Westhampton

Former Perseus ceo Jack McKeown and Verso Advertising president Denise Berthiaume will start a 2,000-square-foot bookstore, Books & Books Westhampton Beach, scheduled for a July 4-opening. In an unusual initiative, store owners McKeown and Berthiaume have created a marketing and branding affiliation with Mitch Kaplan’s renowned group of four Books & Books bookstores. They’ll use the layout and design of Kaplan’s stores on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach and in the Bal Harbour Shops mall.
