Hachette Book Group Relocates 52 Jobs

Hachette Book Group announced changes to several divisions, related to the Perseus Books Group acquisition and warehouse expansion in Lebanon, IN, saying those developments provided “an opportunity to reevaluate where certain functions of HBG’s business are situated in order to make the most efficient use of the many offices we now have.” As a result, 52 job functions are being consolidated and transferred to different HBG locations. It’s not clear yet how many current employees will lose their jobs as a result of the reorganization, and how many will relocate and stay with the company. Barnes & Noble Ends Fiscal Year On A Loss

Barnes & Noble reported fiscal fourth quarter sales after the close of the market on Wednesday. Sales fell $33 million (or 3.6 percent) to $877 million in the quarter. Retail sales fell $17 million — even as physical book unit sales as measured by Nielsen Bookscan continue to rise, as Amazon gains market share at BN’s partial expenses, and Nook sales, which don’t have all that much further to fall, declined $10.5 million, to $42 million for the quarter. Same-store sales were down 0.8 percent in the quarter, and the company continued to blame “store closures and lower online sales.” […]

Briefs: Empresa’s New Books Division; Amazon Updates Kindle; and More

Czech media conglomerate Empresa has launched a books division, Publishing Perspectives reports. The company released its first three titles this month and expects to publish 15 titles by the end of 2016. Empresa already owns an online bookstore which sells more than 170,000 titles by over 4,000 publishers. Amazon released its newest version of the 6″ Kindle, retailing for $99.99 (or $79.99 with ads) and weighing 5.7 ounces.
