Juliana Horbachevsky has joined Harmony Books as senior publicist. Previously she was a publicist at Abrams. At Norton, Elisabeth Kerr has been promoted to director of subsidiary rights, adding oversight for domestic rights sales and licensing agreements to her responsibilities; and Mary Kate Skehan moves up to assistant manager of subsidiary rights, responsible for most audio, book club, first and second serial, and large-type rights, alongside her work in foreign rights, reporting to Kerr. The Center for Fiction highlights 25 accomplished fiction debuts with the longlist for their First Novel Prize. Nominees will be named in September.
German Bookseller Thalia Sold to Herder Family; WME-IMG to Buy UFC
Boston-based private equity company Advent International has finally executed a deal to sell Germany’s leading bookselling chain Thalia. The lead buyer is Germany’s Herder family, which has been in the publishing business for over 200 years. The Kreke family continues to hold a minority share. AAP Releases Annual Estimates
On Monday, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) released headline data from the second set of statistics they maintain, called StatShot Annual. In contrast to their monthly reports, which collect dollar sales only as actual reported data from about 1,200 publishers, StatShot Annual tabulates more detailed dollar and unit sales data from almost 1,800 publishers and then — to our mind — renders it mostly useless by multiplying it to pretend that we can say something about the other 70,000 or so registered and active publishers who never report data to anyone.
