Bookselling: Amazon NYC and Amazon’s Reviewers

July 5, 2016By Michael Cader

The New York Post cites at least two sources that tell the paper Amazon is set to lease space at Manhattan’s under-construction Hudson Yards for a bookstore. One source says that stores in development are expected to open in late 2018 or early 2019. A different anonymous source tells the paper, “I don’t know if the final lease was signed yet, but I know the deal is happening. There’s no way that deal is dying.” Later this year, the company will open the next two Amazon Books stores in La Jolla, CA and Portland, OR. Separately, the Seattle Times has a […]

Talese Disavows Disavowal; Publication Moves Forward

July 4, 2016By Michael Cader

Publisher Grove Atlantic sent out a statement early Friday afternoon in which a calmer author Gay Talese takes a softer position than he expressed to the Washington Post about his forthcoming book, The Voyeur’s Motel. “When I spoke to the Washington Post reporter, I am sure I was surprised and upset about this business of the later ownership of the motel, in the eighties,” Talese says in the statement. “That occurred after the bulk of the events covered in my book, but I was upset and probably said some things I didn’t, and don’t, mean. Let me be clear: I am […]

People: Harlequin Launches Park Row Books Imprint, and More

July 1, 2016By Sarah Weinman

Harlequin will launch a new imprint, Park Row Books, in summer 2017, with a focus on “thought-provoking and voice-driven novels” that have “mainstream appeal.” Executive editor for the imprint Erika Imranyi told the AP: “We’ve been growing that part of our business for a very long time. It’s a small piece of what we do, but a really important piece.” Park Row Books is named for the street where Harlequin’s offices were once located. Separately, the rebranded HQ imprint in the UK (combining Harlequin UK and Mira UK, as an imprint of Harper UK), has announced the acquisition of their […]

Talese Disavows Forthcoming Book After Discrepancies Emerge

July 1, 2016By Sarah Weinman

Gay Talese’s new book The Voyeur’s Motel has stoked controversy since a lengthy excerpt was published by the New Yorker in April, describing how a Colorado motel owner repeatedly spied on guests throughout the 1970s and 1980s. But the Washington Post recently uncovered property records that showed the subject of the book Gerald Foos did not actually own the motel for the bulk of the 1980s. Apparently Foos did not disclose this to Talese and he had not confirmed Foos’ ownership through his own research, led Talese to disavow the book, scheduled for publication by Grove Atlantic on July 12. “I should not have believed […]
