Apple reported fourth quarter results on Tuesday morning, with sales of $46.9 billion in line with expectations and net income of $9 billion, or $1.67 per share, a penny per share above “expectations” — even though those numbers were below results from the same quarter a year ago. iPads moved another 9.3 million units in the quarter, and “services,” which includes the digital media stores, was up 24 percent year over year, to a new record of $6.325 billion for the quarter, compared to $5.086 billion a year ago. American Paul Beatty’s The Sellout Wins the Booker Prize

Paul Beatty’s wickedly funny and thoughtful novel The Sellout — first published by FSG in the US in 2015, but issued in the UK by independent Oneworld in 2016 — won the Booker Prize. Oneworld also published last year’s winner, Marlon James’s A Brief History In Seven Killings. That makes the 54-year-old New Yorker the first American to ever win the prize, which opened to American contestants in 2014. After being removed from her position as Register of Copyrights and appointed to a new senior advisor role, Maria Pallante has resigned instead, Politico reported. Her resignation was confirmed by an LOC spokesperson. BEA Chicago Attendance Was Down By Over A Third

Back in May we all knew that the Book Expo show in Chicago was smaller and quieter than recent conventions in New York, though at the time conference did not release attendance estimates. Rather, representatives said their expectation — and then their post-show rough estimate — was about the same level of attendance as in New York in 2015, or 17,000 to 18,000 people. On Friday, new Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced that the head of the Copyright Office Maria Pallante was being moved into a new position, senior advisor for digital strategy, where she “will support the Librarian’s agency-wide digital strategy, advising on collecting and preserving digital materials, collections copyright status, licensing opportunities and third-party collaborations related to digital content.” A search is being conducted for a new register of copyrights and Hayden said in the statement that “improved information technology for the office will be a top priority.” Karyn Temple Claggett serves as as acting register of copyrights. At HarperCollins Children’s Books, Olivia Russo has been promoted to publicity manager. Founder of art books publisher Unpiano Books, Jesse Pollock has joined Anthology Editions as senior project manager. In addition, Casey Whalen has joined as sales director. Whalen was previously a sales manager at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Rizzoli International Publications. Awards The UK’s Folio Prize, which originally distinguished itself by considering English-language books from all over, including the US, plans to return in 2017 after a suspension and will make works of nonfiction eligible as well.
