After a job-ending $40 million reduction in expectations for former ceo Linda Zecher followed by a warning from the board that things might be even worse, those ominous signals (“Considering the importance of the third quarter, HMH plans to provide a further update on its expected financial performance for the full year when it issues its third quarter earnings in November 2016”) bore out poorly on Thursday morning for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Geekwire has drawn attention for a story yesterday that underscores a policy introduced a couple of months ago: Amazon has shifted pricing practices at their growing network of Amazon Books stores, ostensibly selling books and other items (except Amazon devices) at list price to customers who are not Amazon Prime members. Former chairman of the William Morris Agency Norman Brokaw, 89, died on Saturday in Beverly Hills of complications from pneumonia. Brokaw started working in the WMA mailroom in 1943, when he was 15 — hired by his uncle Johnny Hyde. (As the NYT reminds us, “William Morris” himself was an immigrant born with the name Moses Zelman.)
