HarperCollins Launches Anniversary Exhibit at Columbia

HarperCollins and the Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library have announced an exhibition celebrating the publisher’s 200th anniversary. Open now through July 21 in the library’s Kempner Gallery, “Harper & Brothers to HarperCollins Publishers: A Bicentennial Exhibition” highlights continuity and change in the publishing industry. The exhibit includes, among other things, the contract for Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, Thomas Nast’s political cartoons for Harper’s Weekly, and correspondence with historical figures like John F. Quarto’s Earnings Suffer From Direct Sales Unit

Quarto reported sales of $188 million for 2016, up $6 million from the year before, though operating profit fell to just $1.7 million, due to the $14.2 impairment charge related to the Books & Gifts Direct businesses in Australia and New Zealand that are being sold. Operating profit absent that division was $18.6 million, up $3 million. “Underlying” sales, without the $12.7 million added by the acquisitions of becker&mayer and Harvard Common Press during the year, also declined. Olivia Taussig has been promoted to senior publicist at Viking/Penguin. Awards Claudia Rankine has won the 2016 Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry, a $10,000 award presented by the Library of Congress, for Citizen: An American Lyric (Graywolf). Nathaniel Mackey won the Bobbitt lifetime achievement prize. Microsoft formally confirmed that the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update on April 11 that will make the Microsoft Edge browser “the default reader for books in Windows Store” for ebooks purchased from the Windows Store.
