Kazuo Ishiguro Wins the Nobel Prize

The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded Thursday to British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro. Ishiguro is best known for his novel The Remains of the Day, which won the 1989 Man Booker. He is also the author of Never Let Me Go, and most recently, The Buried Giant. The Swedish academy noted in a statement, “Ishiguro’s writings are marked by a carefully restrained mode of expression, independent of whatever events are taking place. President Ann Godoff says, “His breadth of experience and intellectual depth make him a perfect match for our editorial direction.” Margo Lipschultz will join Putnam as executive editor on October 23. Acquisitions: PRH Buys Sasquatch, Octopus Buys Kyle Cathie

Penguin Random House acquired Seattle-based publisher Sasquatch Books, which it already distributes through Penguin Random House Publisher Services, last month, for undisclosed terms. Sasquatch will continue to be distributed through PRHPS will report to that unit’s president Jeff Abraham. No changes are planned for its location, management, or staff. Abraham says, “When it became known that the company was looking for new ownership to take Sasquatch to the next level, the prospect of PRHPS acquiring the company, while maintaining its independence in Seattle, was enormously appealing to both sides. We’ve accomplished so much with the incredible team at Sasquatch over the last few years. Now, […]

The National Book Awards announced their nominees on Wednesday morning, with the winners to be named on November 14. The fiction list gives 2011 winner Jesmyn Ward a chance for a second win, and includes two debuts, from Lisa Ko and Carmen Maria Machado.
