As long promised, now Spotify has launched audiobooks, making 300,000 titles available for purchase to its US users. Spotify’s vp and global head of audiobooks and gated content Nir Zicherman said, “Starting today, users in the US can easily find audiobooks on Spotify alongside music and podcasts as a section in their library, in search, and in their curated recommendations on Home.” Audiobooks are priced individually (the company says prices are “competitive and in line with other a la carte audiobook retailers”) and there is no credit system in place akin to Audible’s. Metropolitan Books to be Disbanded
Co-founder of Metropolitan Books and current svp, publisher Sara Bershtel and “other staff” at Metropolitan “will be leaving” on October 14, Macmillan confirmed to Publishers Lunch after we learned that the respected imprint would be closed and inquired for details. Longtime Metropolitan editor and associate publisher Riva Hocherman will remain and work for Holt, we were told separately, though she was not mentioned in the brief statement. Trade Sales Grew to $10 Billion, According to AAP Stats
The AAP released their StatShot Annual Report for 2021 on Friday, for the second year in a row providing a substantial collection of actual, directly-reported data, received from a modestly expanded pool of reporting publishers. Trade sales (starting with their default measure, which includes religious presses alongside trade) increased more than 13 percent to $10.14 billion — gaining almost $1.2 billion — with 1.412 billion trade units sold in 2021, up 11.1 percent from 1.271 billion in 2020.
