Not Fooled
In a polite, indirect British way, this article from the Bookseller suggests that Reed Exhibitions was a day early in reneging on their promise to make a decision about this year’s London Book Fair by now. We’re not going to chase every acknowledgement from a company of scale that they will not exhibit at or attend the show (or, for that matter, the planned Bologna Book Fair early in June). If any large entity is committed to exhibiting, however, that would be newsworthy.
Unions
Further to Monday’s news that Duke University Press is unionizing, the union announced on Twitter that the university has hired “anti-union law firm Ogletree Deakins in response to our organizing efforts.” The thread urges the university to “stop working with a third party & start negotiating with us. It’s our right to organize. We are a majority of eligible employees, & we’re ready to work openly with management toward a fair & just contract.”
Duke University told PL in a statement, “We understand that some employees within the Duke University Press (DUP) are seeking to create a ‘DUP Workers Union’ affiliated with the NewsGuild-CWA. Duke University will observe all legal requirements of the union organizing process if and when it is activated.
“Duke is deeply committed to our core values of respect, trust, inclusion, discovery and excellence, and these values are reflected in the extensive benefits that are offered to all Duke employees. To be clear, DUP employees are Duke University employees, which means they already receive comprehensive health, dental, vision and life insurance coverage with 80% of the premiums paid by the university, six weeks of paid parental leave, either a defined benefit pension or a 403b retirement program to which the university contributes between 8.9% and 13.2% of an individual’s annual salary, and tax-free grants worth more than $200,000 for their children’s college tuition.”
