Macmillan announced online that their digital self-publishing service Pronoun is “winding down” and expected to close by mid-January. The “epilogue” post says, “While many challenges in indie publishing remain unsolved, Macmillan is unable to continue Pronoun’s operation in its current form. Every option was considered before making the very difficult decision to end the business.” Macmillan acquired Pronoun in mid-2016. New Kindle Oasis Is Waterproof
Amazon announced its new ereader, the Kindle Oasis, on Wednesday morning after a banner ad for the Amazon Android app leaked some of the details. The new device is waterproof: “it’s designed to withstand getting splashed at the beach or dropped in the bath tub, hot tub, or pool.” It also has a fast-charging battery that enables it to charge in two hours, plus the longer-than-before battery life. It’s priced at $249.99 for the 8 GB model and $279.99 for the 32 GB model, as ever, with ads. Amazon Files Arbitration Against Multiple Bad Actors, Alleging Purchase of Fake Reviews and KDP Fraud
Amazon filed five different arbitration demands against an assortment of people and companies trying “to gain an unfair competitive advantage” within the KDP ecosystem. Two cases allege the creation of “false, misleading, and inauthentic customer reviews for their self-published books sold on Amazon.” Amazon says that, “Despite substantial efforts to stamp out the practice, a small number of bad actors continue to endeavor to use inauthentic reviews to boost their sales.” They also say in their demand that since the start of 2015 they have sued “over 1,000 defendants who offered to post fake reviews in exchange for payment.” The […]
Kobo Adds Audio Subscription, Sales
Kobo has launched a broad program of digital audiobooks, available for individual purchase but also available through a $9.99/month subscription, promising “the best value on a subscription plan in the category.” The service is also available in Canada ($12.99/month), the UK (£6.99/month), Australia ($12.99/month), and New Zealand ($13.99/month). Quarto Falls on Profit Warning, and China Literature Heads for IPO
Ahead of reporting results for the first half of 2017, Quarto Group warned that its earnings guidance “for 2017 and beyond has been set too high.” That’s due to both “a lower-than expected trading performance in the year to date” during “the ongoing soft retail environment” as well as an accounting adjustment from the previous year. Corporate: Ingram Pairs with Optiqly; BISG On Rights
Marketing technology and services startup Optiqly — still in private beta and launching shortly — will provide a version of their tools through Ingram’s CoreSource as a subscription service, adapted to focus on servicing the company’s distribution clients. The deal provides Ingram an exclusive among a limited set of large distributors and wholesalers. Ingram Content Group Ventures was the investor in Optiqly’s first seed funding, and they are leading the second seed funding round, underway now.
