Foxy Brown Breaks Silence on Lawsuit

July 29, 2008By Michael Cader

An attorney for Foxy Brown has offered a grab-bag of replies to the suit brought by Simon & Schuster seeking to recover their advance of $75,000. Attorney Laura Dilimetin tells AllHipHop.com that Brown’s “health became a priority” after facing some hearing loss in 2005. “With Simon and Schuster’s blessings, Foxy Brown underwent extensive surgical procedures and a lengthy recovery time, fighting to restore her hearing,” Dilimetin wrote. After her recovert, Dilimetin insists, “Simon and Schuster decided not to go forward with the project,” adding “many attempts were made by Foxy Brown’s agents to resurrect the deal, to no avail.” (Even […]

The Sunday LA Times runs this note from David Ulin: This issue of the Los Angeles Times Book Review is the final one in its current form. Starting Aug. 3, Sunday book coverage will move to a reconfigured Calendar Part II, which will be renamed Arts & Books and will feature dedicated space for books. In addition to Arts & Books, we will also continue to publish book reviews six days a week in daily Calendar. We will also publish book-related features, both in the daily paper and on Sunday. Former Editors of Los Angeles Times Book Review Protest Paper's Decision to End Weekly Section

July 22, 2008By Michael Macrone

Steve Wasserman e-mailed this letter, also signed by Sonja Bolle, Digby Diehl, and Jack Miles: As former editors of the Los Angeles Times Book Review (1975 through 2005), we are dismayed and troubled at the decision by Sam Zell and his managers to cease publishing the paper’s Sunday Book Review. This step signals the end of an era begun 33 years ago when Otis Chandler, then the paper’s publisher and owner, announced the debut of the weekly section.  Since then, the growth of the Los Angeles metropolitan region and the avidity of its numerous readers and writers has been palpable.  […]

"Love Letters" Tie-In: What Took So Long?

July 18, 2008By Michael Cader

You’ll recall the the Sex & the City movie ignited interest in the nonexistent book featured in the movie, “Love Letters of Great Men.” Now former Picador deputy publisher Ursula Doyle has compiled and annotated a book under that proven title, including “all of the letters referenced in the film,” for quick release on August 15 from Pan Macmillan in the UK. (The DVD of the film is due a month later.) The house says in a short announcement “there will be a huge viral marketing campaign online, including Facebook activity, and we are aiming for simultaneous e-book publication.” They […]

Harper Studio Has Signed 17 Books

July 17, 2008By Michael Cader

They just haven’t announced any of them yet. Portfolio’s blog says 16 are non-fiction, and the other one is what Bob Miller calls a “fable.” That’s more by happenstance than by design, said Miller: Successfully launching a novel by an unknown author takes a bigger marketing push. (HarperStudio will try to save money by focusing its marketing efforts on web outreach, although Miller said its titles will get more sustained support than is now usual). That said, he said, they are hoping to do more fiction down the road.Portfolio
