At Random House Publishing Group, Kristen Fassler has been named Deputy Director, Marketing, reporting to Sanyu Dillon, and Carolyn Schwartz has been appointed VP, Director of Ad/Promo, reporting to Stacey Witcraft. Both begin their positions on September 3. David Inman has been appointed sales and marketing director of Quarto UK, reporting to Ken Fund. Previously he was international sales director for the Octopus Group. J.P. Hunting has joined HarperCollins UK as key account manager for children’s sales. Previously he was the children’s book buyer for Borders UK.

Rowland White has joined Orion to set up a new imprint, as yet untitled, which will publish 12 books per year beginning in 2011.  Previously he was at Penguin/Michael Joseph, where he was the publishing director for non-fiction. Kate Gunning has been named key accounts manager for independents for Random House, effective September 7. Previously she was head buyer at Foyles. A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick has won the Book of the Year award from the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association. Jim Joseph has officially been named president and publisher of Globe Pequot Press after serving in that capacity on an interim basis for the last month. Previously he was COO of the company. Lawrence Dorfman has also been promoted to vice president, sales. Previously he was executive director of national accounts. Rob McMenemy has been appointed regional manager for Egmont’s Central Europe Area and Egmont Holding, Germany. He will continue as senior vice president and managing director of Egmont UK. At Books-A-Million, Doug Markham has been promoted to the newly created position of executive v-p/chief administrative officer in charge of the company’s warehouse operations, information technology and human resources, as well as the oversight of BAM’s finance function. He had been the company’s CFO since 2006 and secretary since March 2008, Replacing Markham as CFO will be Brian W. Former Viking Editor Ray Roberts, 71, Dies

Ray Roberts died after a short illness on Wednesday, August 12, in New York. He was 71. Roberts began his long career in publishing at the University of Chicago Press, and was an editor at Macmillan, Doubleday, Little Brown, Henry Holt and most recently at Viking, from which he retired in 2005. His many distinguished authors include Ansel Adams, David Attenborough, John Fowles, Martha Grimes, Greg Mortenson, Frances Partridge, and Thomas Pynchon.

Geri Thoma has been named as a full partner in the Elaine Markson Literary Agency has changed its name to Markson Thoma. The agency remains at 44 Greenwich Avenue in New York, and now has a website: www.marksonthoma.com. Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn were named the recipients of the 2009 Dayton Literary Peace Prize for Lifetime Achievement. The prize committee also announced the finalists for its fiction and nonfiction categories, including Louise Erdrich, Ma Jian, Richard Bausch, David Grossman, Nicholson Baker, and Thomas Friedman.
