The University of New Mexico Press will become a part of the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences starting March 1, as part of a university reorganization. The $7 million debt owed by UNM Press to the university will be disposed of, though the university has not yet determined how. Interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, Richard Wood said, “UNM Press was at risk of closure,” adding of the debt, “we’ll have to absorb it into the budget somehow.” The press doesn’t plan any editorial changes, but distribution will be outsourced to a third party and the south campus […]

Melissa Danaczko has joined the Stuart Krichevsky Literary Agency as an agent. Danaczko will represent literary and commercial fiction, as well as select non-fiction. She was most recently senior editor at Doubleday. Dana Murphy has been promoted to agent for The Book Group. Katharine McAnarney has joined Little, Brown Children’s as senior publicist. Most recently, she was publicist for Penguin Children’s. University of Akron Press Rehires Two Staffers, Promises Continuity

University of Akron president Scott Scarborough said in a statement on Monday that the university press is “re-engaging the services of the two staff members” who were let go earlier this summer, saying they “will help ensure operations of the UA Press.” Former director Thomas Bacher is not being recalled, however, with Professor Jon Miller serving as transitional director of the press. Briefs: Banks and Perseus Funds Sue Frank Pearl’s Estate; German Publisher Is Rowling Winner; And More

The estate of financier and Perseus Books founder Frank Pearl, who died in May 2012, is being sued by Bank of America, TD Bank, Eagle Bank and even Perseus Funds for more than $50 million, according to the Washington Post, alleging he “sought to avoid payment to creditors by fraudulently moving $59 million in life insurance proceeds and other assets from his estate into Perseus Trust, which he had created for his wife” after being diagnosed with terminal cancer in November 2011. University of Nebraska Press to Acquire Potomac Books; Digital Publisher Frederator Launches

University of Nebraska Press is purchasing substantially all the assets of Potomac Books for $1.2 million in a deal set to close by the end of March. The plan includes the acquisition of their inventory, publication rights, and the trade name of Potomac Books. The company specializes in military history and military affairs and “thus, UNP will publish and sell new works in this area, and will market and sell the existing inventory under the Potomac name.” According to the minutes from a meeting of the UN regents, the acquisition includes “a minimum of $700,000 in existing print inventory and another $100,000 for PBI’s […]

University of Missouri Will Keep Its Press After All

The University of Missouri Press, which had been set for closure this summer, with its assets to be transferred to a newly-imagined “teaching press,” will be preserved in more or less its current form.
