Hachette Offers Free "Open Access" to Selected Books

Hachette Book Group has inaugurated a promotional program that allows visitors to their web site to read a variety of books in their entirety on the HBG web site, in partnership with LibreDigital. The first group of titles “represents a wide range of bestsellers, critically acclaimed authors, and eagerly anticipated books…to build buzz for authors and new titles, as well as help them discover popular backlist books.” The title selection will change every 30 days,a nd now they are offering 17 books from across the company’s divisions.

Kiyosaki Starts Free Wiki-Style Books

As first announced in December when Robert Kiyosaki took the cover advertisement in PW, his new work Conspiracy of the Rich: The 8 new Rules of Money will be written and publisher for free initially via a “wiki-style” presentation at www.conspiracyoftherich.com. So far just the introduction has been posted, and visitors need to register in order to read more than a small portion of the work.

Wikipedia Book Has a New Twist on Free

O’Reilly Media’s guide book Wikipedia: The Missing Manual is now available for free online as a Wikipedia entry itself–and open to editing and updating like any other posting on the online encyclopedia. Editor Peter Meyers says “the book is going to reside in the site’s Help area, naturally, since the book is all about helping people edit and navigate their way around Wikipedia…. Our hope is that the Wikipedia community will flock to the book and ‘curate’ it by adding tips, tricks, and by updating the material to reflect changes to Wikipedia since we’ve published the original edition. Over 2 Million Downloads for New Orman Book

Spiegel & Grau reports that the weeklong Oprah-driven promotion of free electronic versions of Suze Orman’s 2009 Action Plan led to over 2.1 million English-language downloads and another 45,000 Spanish downloads. The publisher says they have 1.1 million copies in print of the trade paperback.

One Dollar Ebooks

Orbit has launched a promotional program offering a different book each month, selling for just one dollar each. Vendors include Amazon and Sony, along with Stanza, eReader, Fictionwise, Diesel, and MobiPocket. This month’s offering is Brent Weeks’ debut THE WAY OF THE SHADOWS. Publisher Tim Holman says: “We believe that this promotion will give readers a great opportunity to discover new writers. Orman to Launch New Book with Another Oprah Giveaway

When Suze Orman promoted what became over a million free downloads in less than two days of her book WOMEN & MONEY on the Oprah Winfrey Show last February, the book had already been on the market for almost a year. Now Orman and publisher Spiegel & Grau are building on that experiment by launching her newly-announced SUZE ORMAN’S 2009 ACTION PLAN with an appearance on Oprah’s show and a free ebook download for a full week, ending with a live webcast on January 15.
