Authors: John Green’s Fame Intensifies; Foer “Cultivates Thought” at Chipotle; and More

May 15, 2014By Sarah Weinman

The Wall Street Journal profiles John Green at length a few weeks in advance of the release date for the highly-anticipated film version of THE FAULT OF OUR STARS, which the paper reports has sold more than 9 million copies in print. In trying to “pinpoint when Green went from being famous on the Internet to being just plain famous” the paper says “he avoids making physical contact with strangers and feels unsettled by the massive crowds he has been drawing during a nationwide tour” which included a recent screening for fans at a mall in Miami where “some 5,000 […]

May 15, 2014By Michael Cader

Longtime HarperCollins executive editor Tim Duggan will move to Crown on June 9 where he will serve as publisher of his own Tim Duggan Books imprint. He will publish 8 to 10 titles a year, “evenly split between nonfiction and fiction,” reporting to Molly Stern. The paper’s column finds it “understandable” that authors “are irate over the unequal treatment.” On the one hand, Amazon “is by no means unique in employing this tactic.” But “in some ways, Amazon’s decision to choke off Hachette is similar” to the net neutrality showdown, they suggest. “As Amazon gains more and more market share, its power to do so will only increase.” While […]

Expansions: Alloy Powered By Amazon, and OverDrive’s Network

May 14, 2014By Michael Cader

Just about a year ago Alloy Entertainment paired with Amazon as the first big licensee in the Kindle Worlds fan fiction initiative, and in February Alloy added more licenses to the program. Now, PL has learned via our comprehensive deal reports that Alloy is starting a book imprint as part of the “Powered By Amazon” initiative. That program was first created in late 2010 for Seth Godin’s The Domino Project line. At that time, Amazon described the program as “enabl[ing] authors to use Amazon’s global distribution, multiple format production capabilities, including print, audio and digital, as well as Amazon’s personalized, targeted marketing […]
