Legal A jury cleared Nicholas Sparks of all counts of defamation and violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, concluding a long-running suit filed by Saul Benjamin, former headmaster of the North Carolina school founded by Sparks and his wife. Tulsa bookstore Phantasmagoria Books and Records reported on Facebook that the man who spraypainted graffiti and a swastika outside the store is in custody. “He has been referred for a mental health evaluation because he reportedly thought we were an army surplus store that was in this location 25 years ago. Katie Boland has been promoted to events and programming manager, books at Catapult, Counterpoint, Soft Skull. In the UK, Richard Atkinson is joining Penguin Press in the newly created role of publishing director starting September 2 and reporting to managing director Stefan McGrath. He was previously senior commissioning editor at Bloomsbury UK. Phantasmagoria Books and Records in Tulsa, OK continues to be harassed by white nationalists. On Monday, co-owner Shannon Iwanski saw a man spray paint a swastika and graffiti on the sidewalk in front of the store, and reported it to local police.

Amazon Admits They Are Unable and/or Unwilling to Prevent Counterfeit and Infringing Books

Some days the news practically writes itself. On Monday the NYT clearly documented just how polluted the Amazon bookstore has become with fake, illegitimate and counterfeit editions of books by an obscure author like George Orwell. The full statement provided by an Amazon spokesperson in response unwittingly makes the case against the online seller. The Washingtonian rounded up additional apologies and comments from Democratic politicians who commented on the record for Mark Halperin’s just-announced book, including this from former secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius: “I knew that Mark Halperin was a well-known author and political journalist but unfortunately was not as aware of the details of his disgraceful behavior toward women as I should have been.
