Court Certifies Class In Scribe Media Case

December 4, 2024By Erin Somers

The US Court for the District of Texas Austin Division has certified the class in the class action suit against Scribe Media and its successor. Former employees sued the publisher for failing to comply with the WARN Act’s notice requirement when it terminated 90 its employees in 2023.  Judge Dustin Howell certified the class as defined as “[a]ll former Scribe employees throughout the United States who were terminated as a result of a ‘mass layoff,’ as defined by the WARN Act, without 60 days advance written notice, beginning on May 24, 2023.” This means that it includes any employees who […]

Tattered Cover Laid Off 15 Employees Following Sale to BN

December 4, 2024By Erin Somers

Colorado book chain Tattered Cover laid off 15 employees since its acquisition by Barnes & Noble this summer, retaining 51 staff people. Westword reports that staff sat for re-interviews during the transition process, resulting in the layoffs. The retailer’s June bankruptcy filing asserted that BN planned to offer employment to “substantially all” of Tattered Cover’s employees. Managing director Derek Holland said, “We now have 51 employees across all four of the Tattered Cover locations. We conducted a thorough rehiring process for all booksellers led entirely by me and all four store managers. Based on the results of those interviews, we let […]
