Borders has hired Michele Delahunty-Cloutier as evp, chief merchandising officer, overseeing merchandising, marketing and supply chain and reporting to Mike Edwards. Most recently she was brand president for Chico’s FAS, and she had been svp, general merchandise manager for Ann Taylor Stores. Borders has also named Eric Kovats regional vp for the Southeast and Beatrice Vicente as regional vp for the West Coast. Molly Stern has been officially cleared to join the Crown Publishing Group as svp, publisher of the Crown and Broadway imprints, starting immediately and reporting to president Maya Mavjee. Mavjee reiterates, as she noted in restructuring the Crown group in late April, that Stern will oversee the two lines’ “traditional areas of expertise” which span a variety of “narrative nonfiction areas,” but with Stern’s personal focus on fiction she will also work to “grow and to provide a new vision and director for [their] fiction publishing program.” Stern was editorial director of fiction and executive editor at Viking, where she […]

Reinforcing our point above about Borders, the chain has cut yet another 100 jobs from their LaVergne, TN distribution center (after eliminating 120 positions there earlier this year). Spokesperson Mary Davis tells the Nashville Business Journal, “We are in the process of reorganizing core areas of our business around key strategic objectives to transform the Borders brand. She’ll specialize in upmarket fiction and narrative non-fiction. Mary Glenn has been promoted to associate publisher for McGraw-Hill Professional’s business group. Moises Martinez has been promoted to director, Spanish language sales at Random House, leading domestic sales for Spanish titles from Vintage Espanol and Random House Mondadori. Last week Wells Tower won the New York Public Library’s Young Lions fiction award for his debut story collection EVERYTHING RAVAGED, EVERYTHING BURNED.NYPL In the UK, EDItEUR has hired Graham Bell as chief data architect. He was most recently head of publishing systems at Harper UK. In the UK, Tindal Street will move their sales and distribution to Atlantic Books. Scholastic has hired Miriam Farbey for the new position of global publisher, nonfiction in their trade publishing division. She will oversee all children’s trade nonfiction publishing, reporting to trade division president Ellie Berger. Farbey was most recently global publisher at DK. Based in Scholastic’s UK off, she started June 1. James Jayo is joining Globe Pequot Press as an editor for Lyons Press.
