In line with Penguin Random House’s position to skip this year’s planned Book Expo and Book Con — even after Reed Exhibitions rescheduled the events for July — HarperCollins has also withdrawn. “In light of the current situation and the unpredictability of the coronavirus in the coming months, we’ve made the difficult decision to withdraw our participation in Book Expo and Book Con 2020. Creating Online Bookstores Quickly — and Highlighting This Week’s New Releases
Recent start-up Bookshop.org has received a significant lift in recent weeks, as a number of independent bookstores have enrolled with them to create an online storefront quickly and easily. And the organization gives a lift to ABA member stores as well — stores that sign on as affiliates get 25 percent of any sales they generate (raised to 30 percent during the current crisis), plus they all share a pool of 10 percent of sales generated by Bookshop.org from other sources. Strand Bookstore Lays Off “The Majority” of Staff
The Strand Bookstore laid off “the majority of our staff” due to store closures caused by the Covid-19 outbreak. Owner Nancy Bass Wyden wrote in a statement, “In order to preserve The Strand as a business, with no revenue coming in and no clear idea as to when we can reopen our doors, we have had to temporarily lay off the majority of our staff.” As of late 2018 the store employed over 230 people, and PW says the layoffs affected 188 people.
