Kania to Leave Harper, and Paperback Units Are Reintegrated
Senior vice president and publisher of It Books, Harper Perennial, and Harper paperbacks Carrie Kania (who also oversees the Harper Design imprint) will leave HarperCollins at the end of August. She is moving to London, where she will join Conville & Walsh as an agent. Kania joined Harper in 1999. In the wake of her departure, the paperback lines Harper Perennial and Harper paperbacks will be “realigned” within the Harper and William Morrow divisions. Scholastic’s international division has hired Anne Boynton-Trigg as vp, export, and the former holder of that position Edie Perkins takes the new job of vp, international product development, working “across corporate divisions and international groups to strengthen and grow the Scholastic brand globally.” Boynton-Trigg was most recently svp, general manager, with Pearson Longman English Language Teaching. AAP May eBook Sales Nudge Up As Print Sales Take Another Hit
eBook sales reported by 15 companies to the AAP comprised $73.4 million for May, and accounted for 18.5 percent of all net trade sales for the month, consistent with the prior two months. eBooks were the second-largest trade format again, behind trade paperbacks. Between the rise of ebooks and the decline of Borders, overall trade sales suffered their biggest monthly drop so far this year, though, with the steepest falls in adult hardcover and adult mass markets. Earnings Are Down at Scholastic, But They Forecast Rise In Next Year
Trade book sales were down slightly at Scholastic, by 2 percent, in their fourth quarter, at $38.5 million, though the segment finished the year up almost 15 percent at $189.4 million. Companywide, sales were $545.8 million for the last quarter, up 1 percent from a year ago, and earnings from continuing operations before taxes were down 21 percent at $43.2 million.
