The AAP released monthly StatShot data for September, and in turn the first three quarters of the year, showing a business that was between flat and down somewhat — unless you compare it to how we thought the industry was doing a year ago, in which case there is some improvement. As we explained at the halfway mark, the problem is that the AAP has significantly revised upwards their final counts for the 2016 data. That makes it very hard to talk about comparisons with any confidence. What the current report shows is net trade sales for the first three […]

Fire and Fury Sales Build
As the supply chain catches up to demand for Michael Wolff’s FIRE AND FURY, print sales recorded by Bookscan continue to mount. In the second full week on sale, the hardcover moved 324,000 copies — well ahead of the approximately 192,000 copies sold to consumers in the prior week. We asked publisher Henry Holt for an update on their reprints and shipments, which they said would be forthcoming soon. (Update: Later Wednesday morning, Holt said in an announcement that they have sold 1.7 million copies across all formats. There are now 1.5 million hardcovers in print after 22 printings.) Ingram’s […]
Fire and Fury Sells Over 190,000 Hardcovers In Full Week
NPD Bookscan updated their book sales tracking on Wednesday, showing sales for the hardcover edition of Michael Wolff’s FIRE AND FURY through Saturday, January 13, for the book’s first full week of sales. They recorded sales to consumers of just under 192,000 hardcovers for the week, after recording sales of close to 29,000 copies in the first two days on sale the prior week. Publisher Henry Holt was still rushing to print and ship inventory to accounts during the week to catch up with demand. Holt had reported late last Thursday, January 11, that they “will have shipped” 700,000 copies, with […]
More Sales Info on Fire and Fury
Putting exact parameters on sales to date of FIRE AND FURY remains a moving target. In the latest updates, Macmillan ceo John Sargent indicated to the AP that ebook sales are over 250,000 units (and stays with the previous indication that the digital audio has sold over 100,000 units). The WSJ reports that Sargent “confirmed that a million copies had been sold by the close of business on Monday, including e-books, audiobooks and hardcover editions that have been sold or are on order from consumers.” That would mean something on the order of 650,000 hardcovers sold through or backordered by […]
Fire and Fury Sales News
Bookscan shows tracked US sales of the hardcover edition of FIRE AND FURY of a little under 29,000 copies in the first two days on sale (last Friday and Saturday) — still enough to make the book No. 1 in a light sales week, and just the beginning with a reported 1 million-plus copies on the way. Little Brown UK announced that they “currently have 330,000 copies out with customers in home and export and have also sold tens of thousands of e-books and audiobooks over the past few days.” Most UK stores just began receiving inventory this week, even […]
Macmillan Has 1 Million Fire and Fury Hardcovers In Process, Sold “Hundreds of Thousands” of eBooks
Macmillan ceo John Sargent gave the WSJ some long-awaited data on sales for Michael Wolff’s FIRE AND FURY, noting, “We have never seen a book sell at this rate here at Macmillan.” One day ahead of the original publication date of January 9, Sargent indicated “the publisher is reprinting as quickly as it can, he said, and now has more than 1 million hardcover copies in the pipeline.” (The company says it has orders for more than a million books, and is printing to meet the demand.) It will take until some time “next week” to be “caught up with […]
