Less than three years after its founding, Sourcebooks’ Bloom Books imprint is having a banner year, on track to finish 2023 with almost $100 million in gross sales worldwide according to the company. Saga Press Expands, Moves to S&S Flagship Imprint
Saga Press announced that it will expand, adding staff members and moving to the S&S flagship imprint from the Gallery group beginning in 2024. Editorial director Joe Monti will report to Tim O’Connell, vice president and editorial director of fiction at Simon & Schuster. Saga Press plans to double its number of titles by 2026. Other changes to the imprint: Nivia Evans will join Saga Press as a senior editor. Evans was previously at Orbit Books. Sareena Kamath has joined as editor. She was most recently at Zando. Imprints: Bonnier Books UK Adds Children’s Line
Bonnier Books UK will launch the nonfiction children’s imprint Hatch Press in January 2024, planning to publish about 30 titles a year. The line, focused on “hands-on learning, and art and activity titles for fledgling readers between 3-12 years old,” is led by Kieran Hood. The imprint is based on republished editions of the backlist of Salariya, the rights to which Bonnier acquired last November after the publisher was liquidated.
Imprints: Crime Ink
Penzler Publishers is launching Crime Ink, an imprint publishing literary true crime. Tom Wickersham will head the line as editor; he was formerly the manager of The Mysterious Bookshop. Charles Perry becomes publisher, adding to his role as publisher of other Penzler imprints (The Mysterious Press, American Mystery Classics, Scarlet, and MysteriousPress.com). Luisa Smith will serve as editor-in-chief of Penzler Publishers. The imprint will launch with six titles in its first year, starting in winter 2024. Harper Focus is launching a new Spanish language publishing imprint called Harper Enfoque based in Nashville, TN. The imprint is lead by Cris Garrido, vice president and publisher, Spanish division. Authors include Agustín Laje, Margarita Pasos, Sara Huff, Pablo Muñoz Iturrieta, and more, with first titles slated for the fall. Harper to Close Inkyard Press
Amidst a steadily declining market for children’s books, particularly in hardcover, Harlequin Trade Publishing said it “has made the difficult, strategic decision to close the Inkyard Press imprint and transition the titles to Harper Collins Children’s Books.” They note: “Current market conditions have posed a variety of challenges for the business, which has been acutely felt in the YA/middle grade space with a shifting retail landscape, reduced distribution, and higher production costs in a price-sensitive segment.” Inkyard Press employees will be leaving the company August 1, including at least 5 people named in an internal memo.
