HarperCollins Launches 360, A “Global Publishing Program” For Authors

In a move that underscores publishers’ growing desire to maximize the territorial rights they control through direct publishing in a possible markets, HarperCollins announced Wednesday morning that they will launch a new “global publishing program” called HarperCollins 360, starting July 1. Madeline McIntosh has been named chief operating officer for Random House, effective immediately, reporting to ceo Markus Dohle. She also continues with her duties and responsibilities held in her previous position as president, sales, operations and digital. McIntosh first joined the company in 1994 and, after a brief stint at Amazon, rejoined in 2009. Late Friday afternoon Oprah announced via a video message obtained by the NYT that after a two-year hiatus — corresponding to when she left broadcast television and started her own network, OWN — she would bring back her book club, now called Oprah’s Book Club 2.0. BN Puts Nook and College Business Into New Subsidiary, With Microsoft Investing $300 Million

The future of both Barnes & Noble and the digital reading business took new shape Monday morning as the bookseller announced the creation of a new subsidiary, into which they have transferred all of the Nook and BN College units (comprising “their digital device, digital content and college bookstore businesses.”) Microsoft is investing $300 million in that subsidiary–called simply NewCo for now (a standard corporate placeholder before the real name is finalized)–in exchange for preferred shares representing a 17.6 percent stake.
