Otto Penzler has taken sole ownership of the Mysterious Press, after nine years of operating as an imprint at Grove Atlantic. The line will publish 10 books through Grove Atlantic in 2020, and starting in 2021 the Mysterious Press will be distributed by Norton. (Norton already distributes Penzler Publishers two other imprints.) Dover Publications editor Stephanie Castillo Samoy will leave the company on February 7 due to layoffs. She can be reached at scastillosamoy@gmail.com. She is part of a wave of layoffs at the company that is expected eliminate 23 jobs from a staff of 59, announced last November in a notice filed with the state. The layoffs are a small part of much broader cuts underway at Dover’s parent company, LSC Communications. Christina Garces has joined Chronicle Books as senior editor for food and lifestyle. Florian Illies, publisher of Rowohlt in Germany, will step down “at his own request…at some later point this year.” Illies became publisher in January 2019, following the dismissal of publisher Barbara Laugwitz the previous August, a controversial selection at the time. Nicola Bartels will succeed him as publisher starting July 1. Bartels was most recently publisher at Random House Germany.
