Obituary: Martin Cruz Smith

Novelist Martin Cruz Smith, 82, died on July 11. Smith wrote more than 30 books, including the Arkady Renko thriller series, which began with the #1 bestseller Gorky Park (1981) and ended with HOTEL UKRAINE, which was published last week. He was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America in 2019. Smith lived with Parkinson’s since 1995 and incorporated the disease into Renko’s character in later books. “He was a writer, and he did it beautifully and valiantly until the very end,” Smith’s editor, Simon & Schuster publisher Sean Manning, said.

Raynor Winn’s publisher Michael Joseph has put her next book, ON WINTER HILL, on hold, following an investigation published in The Observer early this week that alleges her bestselling memoir The Salt Path contains lies and fabrications. Raynor Winn Responds To Observer Allegations In Detail

Raynor Winn, author of ‘The Salt Path,’ has posted a long response on her website to allegations of fraud made in a recent Observer article. The article uncovered embezzlement accusations from her past and alleges that parts of ‘The Salt Path’ are fabrications. Wiley Partners with Anthropic On AI Integration For Scholarly Research

Wiley has partnered with AI research company Anthropic to introduce standards for how AI is integrated into research content. As part of the partnership, Wiley will adopt Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol, an open standard which enables integration of peer-reviewed content and AI tools across multiple platforms.
