AAP February Report Shows Consistent Digital Drop, Higher Returns

The AAP reported their monthly StatShot statistics for February. Per our long look at the reliability of these monthly tabulations, our monthly focus will be on the digital data. Adult ebook sales of $88 million were down $16.3 million compared to a year ago; children’s ebook sales were $8.1 million, down from $13 million a year ago; and digital audio was $21.5 million, growing $6.6 million from 2015. Total digital sales registered $117.6 million — compared to $147.1 million a year ago. As part of a “plan for growth” at Tor/Forge, Patrick Nielsen Hayden has been promoted to associate publisher, Tor Books, while Devi Pillai also joins Tor as associate publisher, moving over from Orbit, where she was editorial director. In addition, Linda Quinton has been promoted to publisher, Forge Books. The company says it will announce a new head of marketing and publicity in the near future to fill Quinton’s previous role, and it “intends to increase the marketing support” for Tor Teen and Starscape. Potter Helps Scholastic Again

Scholastic reported sales for their fiscal fourth quarter, ending May 31, of  $514 million, up 5 percent (or $26 million) from a year ago, “reflecting higher sales in all of the company’s three segments – children’s book publishing and distribution, education, and international.” Operating income of $58.4 million was up from $33.5 million a year ago, though full-year earnings look to be below the guidance that was lowered a quarter ago, though free cash of $46.3 million was better than projected, “as a result of the timing of new investments.” But regular “one-time” charges continue, however; mostly non-cash charges of $12.7 million related to their headquarters renovation of its headquarters […]
