At Macmillan, Nora Flaherty has been promoted to the expanded role of vp, client publisher sales and distribution. She will oversee the entire third-party distribution area including sales, operations, business development and distribution. Diana Gill will join Tor/Forge as executive editor. Previously she was executive editor at Berkley’s Ace and Roc imprints. Amy Sefton has also been named designer in the ad/promo department. Previously she was an in-house graphic designer and illustrator for BuzzFeed. In addition, the division announced a number of recent editorial promotions. Tara Shanahan has joined HMH Children’s as senior publicity manager; she was previously at Penguin Children’s. Alex Hedley will take over as New Zealand publisher for HarperCollins, filling the role vacated by Finlay Macdonald. Hedley has been general nonfiction publisher at Penguin Random House New Zealand. Simon Ross will take over as ceo of Manchester University Press on August 1, as Frances Pinter steps down. Ross was deputy managing director for academic publishing at Cambridge University Press. Booker Prize Longlist Ranges from Veteran Coetzee to NBCC Winner Beatty

The longlist for the Booker Prize was announced Wednesday morning, and as last year, the list includes titles by five American authors: NBCC winner The Sellout by Paul Beatty (FSG/Oneworld), Hystopia by David Means (FSG/Faber), Eileen by Otessa Moshfegh (Penguin Press/Jonathan Cape), Work Like Any Other by Virginia Reeves (Scribner/Scribner UK), and My Name Is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout (Random House/Viking UK.) Apple Beats Low Expectations

Apple reported fiscal third quarter results on Tuesday afternoon, posting sales of $42.4 billion and earnings of $7.8 billion. While well below the comparable results from a year ago, investors were expecting a softer quarter; by slightly outperforming analysts’ estimates, Apple’s stock was up by close to 7 percent in after-hours trading. As in the last couple of quarters, with softening hardware sales, the company is focusing more on their still-growing “services” business, which includes iTunes and the app store. Hachette Reorganizes Sales Following Perseus Purchase

Hachette Book Group announced a reorganization of their sales department internally this week, following the Perseus acquisition but also influenced by “recent major changes in the retail/wholesale landscape.” The company said the “changes will allow us to sell HBG’s wide range of excellent books in the most effective ways, across the entire range of formats, retail accounts, wholesalers, libraries, and jobbers.” As part of the restructuring, the executive director of field sales position is being eliminated, and twenty-year veteran Mike Heuer will leave the company as of August 1. Announcements: PRH Pairs with InstaFreebie, Amazon Gets Permission to Test Drone Functions In UK

The Random House Publishing Group has joined HarperCollins in working with InstaFreebie to promote pre-publication book excerpts. (Harper acquired The Midlist, a deals email newsletter run by InstaFreebie’s parent company, last October.) InstaFreebie currently reaches approximately 300,000 consumers and delivers excerpts via email, providing optional social DRM — which RHPG is using on their excerpts.
