Flanagan Rejects Prize Money In Protest Over Fossil Fuel Investments

QUESTION 7 author Richard Flanagan has refused to collect his £50,000 award for the UK’s Baillie Gifford prize for nonfiction, which he won last year. At the 2024 award ceremony, Flanagan said that he would not accept the prize until investment management firm Baillie Gifford came up with a plan to divest from hydrocarbon interests. “Toby Mundy, the prize director, confirmed on Wednesday that after a ‘detailed and candid conversation’ with the company’s senior partners, Flanagan had said he was not going to accept the money,” The Times reports. Third Quarter Deals Remain Strong

Overall deal reports remained strong in the third quarter, running ahead of the consumer marketplace, though there was some softening in what has been a long run of new records for major deals in particular and six-figure deals overall. After a soft second quarter (when deal reports declined 4.7 percent, due to a big drop in reports from digital publishers), third quarter deals were up 4.8 percent over the same period in 2024. Fiction remained strong, up over 9 percent, while adult fiction and children’s books declined modestly, and digital publisher deals recovered after a weak first half of the year. […]
